Why Is Your Garage Door Opener Flashing and What Should You Do About It?
A flashing garage door opener light is the unit trying to tell you something. Here's how to decode the most common LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie flash patterns.

A flashing garage door opener light is the unit's way of speaking to you. It's almost always a self-diagnostic code โ and 80% of the time, the fix takes 30 seconds.
The most common cause: safety sensor misalignment
If the opener light is flashing AND the door reverses or won't close, it's almost always the photo-eye safety sensors at the base of the door tracks.
Quick fix:
- Wipe both sensor lenses with a soft, dry cloth.
- Look at both sensors. The receiving sensor should show a steady LED (not flashing).
- If it's flickering, the sensors are out of alignment. Gently bend the metal mounting bracket until both LEDs are solid.
LiftMaster / Chamberlain flash codes
- 1 flash: Safety sensor wire short or open
- 2 flashes: Safety sensor wire severed
- 3 flashes: Wall control wire short or stuck button
- 4 flashes: Safety sensors out of alignment
- 5 flashes: RPM sensor / logic board issue
- 6 flashes: Motor problem
Genie flash codes
- Door light flashes 10 times: Safety sensor problem
- Long, slow flashes: Force or travel limits need adjustment
When to call a professional
If wiping the sensors and bending the brackets doesn't restore a solid LED, you have one of three issues: a damaged sensor (common after weed-whacker contact), a chewed sensor wire (mice love them), or a logic board problem. None of these are dangerous to investigate, but the fix often requires factory parts.
